Can Gophers Cause Damage?

Generally, people do not want gophers anywhere near their property. The number one reason for this is that gophers can do an unfortunate amount of damage when digging underground tunnels. These tunnels when closer to the surface of your lawn can create areas that are susceptible to cave-ins; but under the surface, the gophers are feeding on the roots of your trees, shrubs, and grass, often pulling the grass itself down through the soil. Gophers feed above and below the surface and will also get into your flower bedding and landscaping as well. The tunnel entrances are accompanied by unsightly dirt mounds.

Contact with gophers should be avoided. Gophers are not typically aggressive towards humans but are quick to bite if threatened. A gopher bite can carry rabies or other diseases like hantavirus and monkeypox.
